Maintenance and vibration measurement on bearings
The function of bearings in the machine is to ensure low friction and support, as well as strength for rotating shafts. When we measure vibrations on the bearing housing, it is the response of the forces transmitted from the rotating part to the stationary part of the machine.
Bearings come in different sizes, designs, materials, lubrications, etc., which means they can be adapted to specific speeds and loads. There can be several causes of faults, including:
- Incorrect lubricant with incorrect lubricating properties, or excessive lubrication or lack thereof
- Incorrect weight on the bearing
- Installation errors
When bearings fail, it results in downtime, often secondary damage and overtime. These costs are expensive, and we want to avoid a scenario where the bearing breaks down. It never happens at a convenient time.
By measuring vibrations and knowing the condition of the bearing, we can plan when to replace it and thus save money by including vibration measurement as part of our maintenance programme.
